This video is extremely exciting for me to watch since it stars Hiroya Shimizu, one of my ultimate personal bias among Japanese actors. Hiroya figured prominently in a couple of Japanese coming-of-age films including Solomon’s Perjury, The World of Kanako and Chihayafuru.

The music video is directed by filmmaker Takuya Uchiyama and stars Hiroya Shimizu as he demonstrates the lengths to which a person will go for love. According to the director, his own goal for the video was to capture a particular ‘moment’ when someone realizes they’ve fallen for someone else.

The music in itself is captivating! Here is the English translation of The Hole:

Under the cloudless sky, alone on a bench at the park,
there are always days to think of someone.
Whenever the world seems to be quieter than the usual
will you look into my heart?

You can spit it out.
It’s alright to scatter yourself
before you miss your footing in this trivial moment.

I must protect my love.
I must protect you.
Let me hear this vanishing heart’s voice.

This hole, so widely open,
don’t hide it from me. Let me see it.
Your true colours,
your existence,
so that I can gently wrap myself up in them,
I will become your wounds.

Realizing I’m someone else’s ruler,
I damage my future by comparing myself to others.
This hole, so widely open in my body,
if only I could fill it up…

It’s alright to run away.
It’s alright to throw everything away
before you break in this trivial moment.

I must protect my love.
I must protect you.
Let me hear this vanishing heart’s voice.

This hole, so widely open,
don’t hide it from me. Let me see it.
Bandaging your injuries
however I please,
so that I can distance myself from the world,
I will become your wounds.

Someone I love is a candidate for suicide.
We’re just like this, brittle and unclear.
I must protect my love.
I must protect you.
From the corner of the world a dim light burns
and scrapes itself up.

This world’s hopes and despairs,
spray all of them.
If only they could rain upon you…
Your true colours,
your existence,
so that I can gently take over them,
I will become your wounds.
