My Day the Series – Episode 7 [Review]

Well, I went into this episode with high hopes, but alas, my hopes were squashed like Kim’s feelings after confessing her love for Ace. Let’s talk about the opening scene, which sets the tone right away for the episode. Do you have to start off with the cliché of our heartbroken heroine’s crying window pane scene?

The Good, The Bad, and the Meh

Apparently, the answer is yes, you must. I have to admit that I laughed at the overuse and misuse of this scene in the show. Had we started by seeing Kim looking out the window silently crying, it would have made more impact. But instead, the director chose to focus on the rain and put us outside of the scene, looking in. We saw the rain coming down and sliding down the windowpane as Kim looks sadly out. I laughed. I know I wasn’t supposed to, but if you wanted me to connect to this moment, it should have gone something like this. We open on Kim, sitting inside, the camera on her side profile as she gazes out the window. As a tear slides down her cheek, she reflects on their past, showing the happy moments then turning to the sad moments. At the end of the scene, it should have been the camera pulling back from her, showing her tears through the window from outside as the scene ends by putting distance between the character and us. Instead, we did the opposite, and it’s jarring.😁

Now there’s another strange detail in this scene. Why does she have baby pictures of Ace on her phone? It would be different if it were baby pictures of the two of them, implying they had been childhood friends or sweethearts. It’s not like she could have taken those pictures when they are the same age. I don’t have baby pictures of my husband on my phone. That’s just weird.

 Transition to the office. I still find some of these extras that are part of the office as strange and out of place. I mean, look at this picture. This guy looks like he’s a loan shark, not working for an office. He doesn’t have any lines, and his facial expressions are overly exaggerated. And Jam’s only purpose in this scene is to remind us that Sky won a cake contest in school. The office flirt just smiles and nods. I don’t get it, but hey, they are new actors, so I should cut them a break, right? Ok. On to plot inconsistencies.

Why in the world would Ace choose to hand over the entire competition to an amateur intern when the chef broke his neck? You mean to tell me in all of the Philippines, there was no one Ace could call to replace the chef? Even if it was the last minute, Ace had tons of money at his disposal and clout because he’s famous. But I’m willing to suspend disbelief and go with it because I assume this is where we will get some flirting between Sky and Ace. (Editor’s note:  OH! Me? ’tis naught but a silly, minor quibble. You’d thought that during all of this critical medical intervention with the guy’s neck and all that, someone might have asked Chef to take off his Chef’s Coat?  🤭 )

But they seemed to take their relationship to the next level without any acknowledgment. There are scenes of intimacy with an almost-kiss on the cheek, touching each other and flirting so hard. It’s like they are already an established couple at this point. That’s a problem for me. They are going so fast it’s like I can’t keep up. Last episode, they talked about some of their feelings without explicitly mentioning each other and their current situation. Then this episode, it’s as if they are together already. Don’t get me wrong; the flirting was cute. It just felt rushed. There needed to be some exploration of feelings or boundary testing. I would have settled for more conversation.

Bullies, whom I hate, apologized for no reason other than a scary dream? Why? Forgiveness is given? Why again? A person doesn’t do an about-face like that. It seems out of character. Not that they had much character development in the first place.

Now we come to the good part of the episode, the Cakes of the World competition. It was cute to watch. Our very own reactor @Yumiko5arrow was shown in the show as the cake maker chosen to represent Spain. I loved seeing all the different nationalities represented and the cakes, but they could have expanded this to be a longer segment. I don’t see them interact with the judges or too much prep work. But again, we are running fast in this episode to move the plot along. I love that everyone is watching at home with excitement and energy.

I won’t give away what happens, but I think the way things end is too cliché. The scene with Ace and his dad feels like we are watching a teen drama.🙄 Sky’s reaction is that of a petulant child screaming into his pillow when things don’t go his way. He needs a nap or a lollipop.👦🧃🍭

They are just marching forward, trying to advance the plot without proper character development. And even if you don’t see much in this review that was positive, I am still hopeful for the next episode. If the showrunners will slow down and take more time to develop their relationship, it can turn out well. Let me know what you think. Do you agree? Am I being too harsh? 🤗💕 – Jen
