And so in October, Thai BL fanatics are bombarded with some amazing shows! Take a look: TharnType, the series, The Effect, and (of course) Dark Blue Kiss. Also note that in November we have Until We Meet Again!

Just by browsing their teaser trailers alone, Dark Blue Kiss appears to be the superior show for October. Of course, I also have to reserve judgment to the other two – but The Effect lacks charisma and TharnType is a bit disappointing to me, in so far as acting quality is concerned, but let’s see..

Dark Blue Kiss is the continuation of Kiss: The Series and Kiss Me Again. What used to be a mixed cast, developed into an exclusive BL. The hetero couples were boring anyway.

DBK continues the relationship (and personal challenges) of Pete (Tay Tawan Vihokratana) and Kao (New Thitipoom Techaapaikhun). It started with a lot of animosity and mischief but they soon develop feelings for each other. As expected of any BL stories…

Episode One is exciting, dramatic, and filled with lots of eye candy. It introduces a new character (actually some new characters) that may cause some ripples between Pete and Kao.

Chayapol Jutamat nicknamed AJ is a Thai actor, he has an identical twin brother named Chayakorn Jutamat nicknamed JJ. Playing Non in DBK is his first major role.

That new character is AJ Chayapol Jutamat. He plays Non and he’s young, fresh, maybe a bit overconfident but definitely a looker. He’s supposed to be tutored by Kao. He’s also the son of the school director.

Pete and Non did not have a smooth start to speak of. Pete is now an ‘uncle’ among the student population. He’s old at the ‘ripe’ age of of 20? Pete is also starting to show his jealous nature as his relationship with Kao progresses.

Are we in for more intense and confrontational scenes as the series progresses? What sort of character development can we expect from the leads and the new supporting cast?

Dark Blue Kiss is the upcoming series connecting Kiss Me Again, with Pete (Tay Tawan Vihokratana) and Kao (New Thitipoom Techaapaikhun) in front and at the center.

Here’s my reactions and critique of the Episode:

  • Kao (New) has shown acting maturity, as to be expected. While his relationship with Pete is not completely open to the public, they have already made significant progress in so far as accepting their feelings towards each other. New is confident, charming and convincing in a role he has already made his own;
  • Pete (Tay) follows New’s lead, and in certain scenes even levels up in such a superior way. Being intense and angry and sulking and jealous is by no means being in a dark mood all the time. Tay has shown his own personal acting style by being able to show differing emotions;
  • Non (AJ) is the new kid on the block and is as fresh as today’s freshly-bottled-milk delivery. He can’t compete with the leads at the moment – acting wise, but for someone who has little acting exposure, he can certainly light up the screen with his amazing on-screen presence. Definitely a star on the rise;
  • Sun (Podd) and Fluke (Mark) are the two ‘other’ couple. They interest me quite a bit but they can’t handle the immense popularity of Tay and New. So they settled for a confrontational relationship just the same. I hope their characters are developed carefully so that they will not be just the “second couple” all the time. Their acting – is at best – quite tentative and both lack the kind of authority reserved for seasoned actors such as New;

Favorite scenes; Aside from the Pete pool show-off, and the as expected Kao jumping in the pool, the scene stealing prowess of Non as he hugs the spotlight while Pete looks so “small and insecure” as he looks at the sidelines. And being called an ‘uncle’ is both funny and amusing at the same time.

Episode One is definitely a great start for DBK. I would not expect anything less from GMMTV anyway.
